Progress is desired by all nations of the world. No sensible human being would intentionally try to curb it. However dynamic global development also results in negative changes to the natural environment, the effects of which may prove disastrous for the entire planet in the foreseeable future. Returning to a pre-industrial state and expecting nature to deal with repairing the damage by itself is unrealistic. What remains is sustainable development. We have to do as much as we can in order to slow down the increase of the Greenhouse Effect and to stop further environmental degradation.

The term 'sustainable development' was first used more then twenty years ago at the United Nations General Assembly. At the 1992 Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit it was adopted as a commentary concerning the further development of humanity. At the same time, the Agenda 21 document was drafted. In one of its paragraphs all the countries encompassed by the agreement were obligated to "promote education, shape awareness and training within sustainable development and environmental protection." However, as discussed at the following summit in Johannesburg, the effects of the activities undertaken turned out to be smaller than expected. That is why the UNESCO announcement of the worldwide DECADE OF EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT was an important event. Everything should be done, if not to stop completely, then to at least slow down the further increase of environmental degradation. The best results can be achieved by proper education and sensitizing of the younger generation to environmental problems.

The long-standing activity of CARETAKERS OF THE ENVIRONMENT INTERNATIONAL, an independent organization established in 1986, embracing secondary school students and teachers whose interests are focused specifically on the issues of environmental protection has become a crucial part of these programs. In July 2006 the 20th annual CEI conference organized by CEI Poland will be held in Silesia, in southern Poland.

During this meeting in Poland, young people from various countries of the world will have an opportunity to present the results of the projects carried out in their countries over the past year. They will also be able to become familiar with the environmental problems and the local communitiy's achievements in the field of environmental protection in the highly urbanized and industrialized region of Silesia. Experienced and new caretakers from the entire of the world are invited and we hope that organizing the CEI conference in Poland will ensure a larger participation of Polish youth, as well as the youth from other Eastern European countries, particularly countries bordering Poland.

CEREMONY OF THE UNIFICATION OF EARTH TREASURES.

One of the items on the agenda of the 20th annual CEI Conference is a ceremonial preparing of a trunk with the treasures of the Earth. Representatives of the countries participating in the conference will place small pieces of natural resources from their countries in a decorative trunk. The ceremony will take place in a unique location about 140m below ground, in the vast Warsaw Chamber of the Wieliczka Salt Mine. This place is a very popular tourist attraction and can be found on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list.
We kindly ask all the delegations to bring a small piece (up to 100-200 grams) of one of the natural resources most characteristic for their country. Minerals in the liquid state or powder should be placed into transparent packaging.
Let the treasures collected in this extraordinary setting make us realize how much we gain from Nature, how limited the treasures of the Earth are and how important it is for us to learn to use them wisely and to share them justly with others.

PATRONAGE.

The conference is held under the honorable patronage of Mr. Michał Seweryński, the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Poland, and Mayors of cities: Katowice, Chorzów and Siemianowice ¦l±skie.

University Centre for Environmental Studies UCBS of Warsaw University held the scientific patronage of the CEI 2006 conference. Conference program is assisted by scientists from Warsaw University, Katowice Branch of Polish Academy of Sciences, University of Silesia and AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków.

HEALTH CARE IN POLAND.

Every person staying temporarily in the territory of Poland is entitled to health care services. In case of sudden illness, accident, injury, intoxication or life threat a patient receives necessary medical benefits without a referral.
In case she/he needs health care, a person from another EU Member State, staying temporarily in the territory of Poland, is entitled to free health care on the basis of a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or a replacement certificate issued in his/her country. A holder of one of these documents receives free services at health care providers who have concluded a relevant contract with the NHF. Therefore, it is strongly advisable to obtain either an EHIC or a replacement certificate.
In case of lack of these documents a patient is obliged to cover costs of a treatment by himself. The same obligation arises in case of a treatment provided by a health care unit which has no contract with the National Health Fund (NHF). Detailed information regarding health care services in Poland can be found on NHF official website www.nfz.gov.pl. Not all medical treatment or transport costs are covered by NHF even if one presents an EHIC . Therefore, whether a visitor is an EHIC holder or s/he comes from a non-EU country, s/he is strongly recommended to obtain additional private health insurance covering their stay in Poland by purchasing it in their home country.

WEATHER FORECAST

July is the warmest month in Poland, including Beskid ¦l±ski (where Ustroń is located). The average monthly temperature in the valley of Vistula is approximately 16.8° C (at about 420 meters above sea level) and approximately 14.3 °C at mountain peaks surrounding Ustroń (at 800-900 meters above sea level). The absolute maximum temperatures of the air registered here were 32.9°C in the valley and 29 °C at the peaks, respectively. On average, in July one should expect 8 days with the maximum temperature exceeding 25° C in the valley, up to 2 days with such temperature at the mountain peaks. At nights the temperature may locally drop down to 10° C, especially in the valleys.
The rainiest months in Ustroń are June, July and August. The average sum of rainfalls collected over the years is 164 mm in the valleys. It increases up to 167 mm at the surrounding peaks. The most summer rainfall events in this part of the region occur in the Vistula basin as far as the Skoczów water-gauge. The average number of days with rain is 16 in the valley of Vistula and 17 at the peaks. The maximum daily rainfall recorded in the Vistula valley near Ustroń is over 160 mm and over 180 mm at the surrounding peaks. However, such phenomena rarely occur. What is common are short showers of considerable intensity, connected with the daily slope convection (the accumulation of Cb clouds), especially in the afternoons. These rainfalls are usually accompanied by storms. Snowcaps or snowfalls are not to be expected anywhere in the mountains.
The anemological conditions are caused mainly by the general circulation of the atmosphere and the landform features. In July a weak wind (up to 3 meters per second) blows along the valleys and a moderate one (up to 5 meters per second) at the peaks of the N-W sector. During storms and the passing of weather fronts stronger gusts may occur.
